Nothing feels quite the same as that stylish delight at getting your new hair color. But once you’ve chosen your new hair color and had it dyed and styled at Salon Povera, what can you do to keep your hair looking great between style appointments?
Hair Color Dos and Don’ts
Following a few simple rules can help you keep your hair color vibrant and your locks lush and healthy while you’re taking care of your hair at home.
Do
- Use color-safe products. Always use shampoos and other products on your hair that are marked “color safe.” Cheaper, generic products can fade the color from your hair and even damage the strands, leaving you with bland, frizzy hair instead of shining, stylish locks.
- Control the water temperature. Rinsing your hair with very hot water can actually make the hair color fade a bit. Rinsing in cooler water is a simple way to protect your hair color, and it’s also a good way to protect the health of your hair, as it can be damaged by using too much heat.
Don’t
- Spend too much time in the sun. While it’s true the sun can naturally lighten your hair color, UV light can also fade the color in dyed hair. So if you plan on spending a lot of time outside, grab a stylish sunhat to protect your hair color.
- Touch up the color yourself. If you notice dark roots showing, you might be tempted to try redoing your hair color at home rather than getting another appointment with a stylist. While it sounds like a good idea in theory, at-home dye kits use different chemicals than professional dye mixes, and the two don’t always work together well, leaving you with dissatisfying results and even damaged hair. Don’t try to DIY your hair color—always stick to professional salon quality for the longest-lasting style.
